Performance Issue: Skype for Business Connection Issue

Brief Description:
There have been reports of issues connecting with Skype for Business, with a message that says the server is temporarily unavailable.
Current Status:
Microsoft engineers identified a configuration setting in Cornell’s messaging systems that may have contributed to the issue. At their suggestion, Cornell engineers made a change to the system which it is hoped has solved the problem. No new reports of the issue have occurred since the change was made and followups with users previously reporting the problem have not generated any feedback of the issue still taking place. Anyone who does encounter this issue going forward, please contact the IT Service Desk. Note for Technical Support Providers--If you see an instance of this problem, this is the information Microsoft would like captured while it is happening. 1. Open a cmd prompt as an admin (if you have admin permissions for your computer). 2. Create folder \temp. 3. Netsh trace start scenario=InternetClient capture=yes tracefile=c:\temp\filename.etl report=no. 4. Reproduce the issue. 5. Run netsh trace stop. 6. Provide the logs to Cornell IT support to be passed along to Microsoft.

Security Alert: Google Docs Phishing Malware

Brief Description:
A malicious "Google Docs" web app is being delivered via phishing emails probably originating from known senders. Clicking the link in the email prompts users to allow a new app to connect to their Gmail account. The app permissions allow it to spread.
Current Status:
Cornell engineers have provided instructions for anyone who clicked the link, so that they can recover from the affects of the phish. See https://it.cornell.edu/security-and-policy/recovering-google-docs-phishing-malware . Cornell had already previously taken steps to block the malicious websites.

Security Alert: Microsoft Word Virus

Microsoft has identified a vulnerability in Word 2003-2013. Malicious documents can execute code to download malware. Disabling Macros is not sufficient but "protected mode" will subvert the attack. A Windows patch is now available via automatic updates.
Current Status:
Microsoft has released a patch for Office for Windows. Office for Mac has not yet been patched, however, work-arounds are available at https://portal.msrc.microsoft.com/en-US/security-guidance/advisory/CVE-2017-0199
