Status:
Closed
Brief Description:
Starting sometime early on Wednesday, January 5, 2022, the integration between Zoom and Cornell's Video Hosting and Sharing / Video on Demand (VOD) service stopped importing Zoom captions and transcripts to VOD.
User Impact:
Zoom Cloud recordings imported into Video on Demand since the morning of Wednesday, January 5, 2022, will lose any captioning or transcripts created in Zoom.
Workaround:
Two options are current available as workarounds.

1. Users can go to the copy of recordings in the Cornell Zoom web portal (see https://cornell.zoom.us/recording ), manually download the audio transcript/closed captions for a recording, and then upload these as captions to the corresponding copy of the recording in the VOD (see https://it.cornell.edu/vod/upload-captions-file-video-demand ).

2. Users can also manually trigger a machine-captioning request in VOD for any media that was imported from a Zoom cloud recording and whose Zoom captions/transcript was not imported because of the current issue. This can be done as described here: https://it.cornell.edu/vod/add-automatic-captions-video-demand#section-3 .
Current Status:
Zoom reports that this issue has been resolved.
Services Affected:
Video Streaming & Hosting
Web and Video Conferencing
Full Description:
Starting sometime early on Wednesday, January 5, 2022, the integration between Zoom and Cornell's Video Hosting and Sharing / Video on Demand (VOD) stopped importing the Zoom captions/transcripts element to the VOD. The vendor has confirmed the issue and is working on a fix, which they estimate for some time in the next several days. The issue only affects the Zoom-side generated captions/transcript; the automatic import of Zoom cloud recordings to VOD is otherwise unaffected.

This issue is complicated by an undocumented part of the Zoom-Kaltura integration update implemented on 12/19/2021: if the settings were in place to import the Zoom captions/transcript to VOD, the process no longer added VOD's own automatic machine captioning to the resulting video, since it was redundant to the Zoom-generated captioning.

IT staff are also currently looking at disabling the Zoom captions/transcript import feature until the issue is resolved by the vendor as this will restore the automatic generation of captions on the VOD-side for future imports of Zoom cloud recordings.

However, due to the current issue preventing the import of Zoom captions/transcript, Zoom cloud recordings in the VOD are now left without captions while the issue persists. For Zoom cloud recordings that are imported without their Zoom captioning or transcripts, IT staff plan to begin generating VOD-side automated machine captions manually in bulk to affected media several time a day until the issue is resolved, to help ensure all media gets captions.
