Brief Description:
A workaround fixed the 5/31 AM issue with logging in to outlook.cornell.edu, other Office 365 apps (including SharePoint Online), Skype for Business, and (for some) Outlook for Windows and Mac. Please report any login problems to the IT Service Desk.
User Impact:
While the issue was happening, users were unable to sign in at outlook.cornell.edu, with a message of "This site can’t be reached. adfs.ad.cornell.edu refused to connect." Issues with full clients like Outlook for Windows and Mac being unable to connect and sync, or Skype for Business being able to connect. The issue occurred when an attempt was made to connect to Office 365 services, and Microsoft’s authentication servers tried to verify the request is valid. This request could have come either through a web browser, such as for outlook.cornell.edu, or for a full client, like Outlook for Windows or Mac, or the Skype for Business full client. Individuals who were already signed in before the problem started around 8:08am were able to continue to use the services as long as they did not quit the application, log out, or their authentication period did not expire.
Workaround:
If authentication has already occurred, keeping the browser open or the application running should keep individuals logged in for the short term. The issue is only blocking new authentication sessions.
Current Status:
The workaround appears to be providing the expected level of service. Anyone still encountering problems should report them to the IT Service Desk.
Services Affected:
Authentication and Authorization
Subsites Affected:
Shibboleth
