Microsoft has taken the step of increasing the number of allowed connections that an individual mail client can make. This reduces the likelihood of delays when retrieving messages, appointments, or contacts from Office 365. This should improve the performance of Outlook 2011, Apple Mail, and iCal clients. Individuals who are affected by this problem will occasionally see severe delays in downloading new mail, synchronizing folders, and other tasks. \n\nThe best option for affected users is to temporarily (or permanently) switch to Outlook Web App (http://outlook.cornell.edu), which is not affected by this problem.\n\nThis issue is with Microsoft's Online Active Directory Service, which is causing Apple Mail and Mac Outlook 2011 to time out while doing certain operations that require that service. When Apple Mail and Outlook 2011 retry the operations, they are throttled as part of Microsoft's standard defense mechanism. Microsoft is addressing the problem but it make take several weeks to fully correct.
