Cornell faculty, staff, and students are unable to install Microsoft 365 applications from the Microsoft portal onto new devices. Online versions are available through outlook.cornell.edu and previously installed apps continue to work. The cause has been identified and CIT continues to explore potential fixes.
CIT continues to pursue fixes for the issue preventing Microsoft 365 desktop applications from being installed on new devices from the Microsoft portal. Cornell faculty, students, and staff can access the web versions through outlook.cornell.edu and also use previously installed desktop applications.

Update: CIT is still pursuing fixes and testing work-arounds for the issue preventing Microsoft 365 Desktop Applications from being installed on new devices. Community members using these Office products can access the web versions and previously installed Desktop Applications.

On Thursday morning, January 29, 2026, Cornell community members who use Microsoft 365 Desktop Applications were unable to install M365 applications on new devices. Devices with previously installed applications were not impacted. The root cause was been identified and CIT began exploring potential fixes.
Microsoft 365 Desktop Apps cannot be installed on new devices. Web versions are functioning as expected.
